Holocaust
Series ?
Respected
Jewish educator and historian Dr. Ken Hanson will present
a six-part Holocaust seminar series sponsored by Congregation
Bet Chaim in Casselberry, beginning April 18.
The
seminars' format reflects Hanson's career-long study of Jewish
and biblical history and his studies at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem.
"I've learned that presenting the Holocaust is giving my audience
the insight to raise the right questions," Hanson said.
Hanson
will focus on what makes the Holocaust unique in history,
how it is different from other genocides such as in Rwanda
and Cambodi. "It is the most universal oppression in history,"
he said.
Using
a variety of multimedia tools including film clips and music,
Hanson's dramatic flair brings history alive for his audiences.
He will also display a Torah scroll that was hidden from Nazi
destruction.
The
first seminar, The Longest Hatred: The Sad Legacy of Christian
Anti-Semitism explores the roots of anti-Semitism by examining
the connection between anti-Semitism and Christian Europe.
From the Crusades to Martin Luther, from charges of "blood
libel" to the Spanish Inquisition, Hanson reveals the extent
to which the excesses of theology laid the foundation for
twentieth century terrors and explores what can be done now
to bridge the gap of misunderstanding.
